In today's market, organizational communication can be summarized into 3 functions: to inform, to persuade, and to promote Goodwill.

The article attached titled "All VIA Rail Services to resume normal operations starting Friday as CP strikes ends"; is a prime example demonstrating the functions of communication.

VIA Rail utilized these functions by:
  • Informing
By releasing this press release, VIA Rail was able to keep travellers informed about the status of the strike. Consumers were advised that operations would return to normal operations; including exceptions.

  • Persuade
By providing "efficient, more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective passanger transportation"; VIA Rail persudes their consumers. They are persuading consumers to use their services; we can all do our part in reducing our carbon footprint. The "green" market will be persuaded to use VIA Rail as it is environmentally friendly.

  • Goodwill

  • By "promoting a positive image", VIA Rail is promoting goodwill. As "winner of the 2011 RAC Safety Award", they can ensure the safety of all passengers.
