Tonight I will be discussing the communication process, and analyzing VIA's welcome homepage.

Step 1: Start with a Message

VIA Rail had an idea, create a webpage. In today's market, businesses must remain technologically savvy to maintain their competitive advantage. A welcome page would be an inviting and informative measure to anyone viewing the site.

Step 2: Transmitter Encodes the Message

VIA Rail converts their ideas into words and images. "A more human way to travel" is their information slogan. The images they choose are of VIA's staff members and consumers aboard one of their trains.

Step 3: Encoded Message is Transmitted

VIA Rail chooses both verbal (text) and non-verbal (image) mediums to convey their message.

Step 4: Encode Message is Received

Us, the viewers of VIA's site translate the message into meaning. I translated this message as being friendly invitiation to check out more. I was provided with a brief overview of what the VIA Rail's experience is all about. The image potrays smiling staff and consumers, to me this demonstrates a pleasant travel experience. This welcome page clearly shows that I am about to enter VIA Rail site; and it entices me to find out more.

Step 5: Receiver Decodes the Message

Feedback is a vital part of the communication process. This will indicate to VIA Rail that their message was received. Effective feedback would include you the consumer entering the website.
